There are several ways to improve safety on the stairs for individuals who are over sixty or those that suffer from problems that make it difficult to climb the stairs. Doing so is very important as a fall on the stairs can easily result in severe injury or even death. To make matters worse, falling on the stairs is a leading cause of hospitalization and death among seniors. Perhaps the most efficient and safest way to improve safety is to use a stair chair.
A stair chair is another name for a stair lift, which is used to carry a person to the upper or lower floors of their home. They get the name stair chair, because a chair that is used to carry the occupant as they move to an upper floor or back down.
While most people find a stair chair to be the best type of stair lift, there is another kind that is sometimes used. This lift is called a perch lift and the rider stands on a small platform as they move along the stairs. Since the rider must remain in an upright standing position, these lifts tend not to be as desirable or safe as a traditional stair chair. Sometimes though, for medical reasons, these lifts are a good choice. They also take up a little bit less space than a stair chair usually does, so on a narrow staircase, they might also have benefit.
